Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Network Architect. This position works within a team of network architects and engineers responsible for architecting, implementing, securing, and administering the university’s data network. A successful candidate must have a track record of understanding technology and security and be be familiar with trends and how they can be applied in a higher education setting. Duties include designing a robust and secure network framework for providing Internet service, core route/switch technologies, and data center networking to meet the needs of Iowa State University.

This position requires an in depth understanding of routing protocols, data center technologies, firewall technologies, and the ability to design secure large scale networks to ensure proper availability and performance.

This position may be filled at a senior or level III. In addition to the responsibilities noted above, the senior level position will also work as a team lead on projects, mentor staff, and direct the work of colleagues.

ITS provides core computing, network services, enterprise systems, and information security resources to the students, faculty, and staff of Iowa State. ITS partners with IT professionals from around campus to provide more specialized IT resources to ISU’s academic and business units.

The successful candidate will be detail oriented, self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, and have the ability to troubleshoot while learning new skills, tools, and technologies. Applicants must also possess strong time management, organizational, commiunication, and decision making skills with the ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex problems.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.

Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, MIS, or IT-related degree.

Experience with Cisco routing and switching technologies.

Demonstrated experience and extensive knowledge of dynamic routing protocols, including EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP.

Demonstrated experience with campus and ISP technologies and design.

Demonstrated experience with data center technologies and design.

Desmonstrated experience with MPLS technologies and network segmentation concepts.

Demonstrated experience with managing firewalls in varied network environments (e.g., MPLS fusion firewall, web application firewall, data center firewall, etc.).

Experience with programming and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Perl, RESTful APIs, Ansible, etc.).

Familiarity with Cisco Nexus and ASR product lines, F5, and Gigamon hardware platforms.

Familiarity with DNS, DHCP, and IP address management, especially Infoblox deployments.

Familiarity with monitoring and logging applications (e.g., Splunk, SolarWinds, Cisco Prime Infrastructure, etc.).
